Il complesso delle terme di Villa San Marco: ricerche in corso

Abstract

Il contributo affronta il tema del complesso termale di Villa San Marco, situata alle pendici nord-occidentali della collina di Varano. Lo studio, frutto di una ricerca dottorale in corso, sintetizza gli aspetti architettonici, decorativi e funzionali del complesso termale e analizza il suo sviluppo nel corso delle varie fasi edilizie del monumento. Particolare attenzione viene qui riservata al rapporto che intercorre tra le terme presenti all’interno della Villa e quelle situate a nord della stessa, separate da una strada in terra battuta nota nelle fonti cartografiche settecentesche come “strada di breccia”. Inoltre, si tenterà di ricostruire i percorsi termali all’interno della Villa, analizzando, sinteticamente, la disposizione degli altri ambienti all’interno degli spazi del monumento.

This paper deals with the theme of the thermal complex of Villa San Marco, located on the north-western slopes of the Varano hill. The study, a result of ongoing doctoral research, summarizes the architectural, decorative and functional aspects of the thermal complex and analyzes its development during the various building phases of the monument. Particular attention is paid here to the relationship between the baths inside the Villa and those located north of it, separated by a dirt road known in the eighteenth-century cartographic sources as “strada di breccia”. In addition, an attempt will be made to reconstruct the thermal paths inside the Villa, by analyzing, briefly, the arrangement of the other rooms within the spaces of the monument.
